THE HISTORY OF CONJURING IN GREECE

Volume I. Christopher (Goussis Christoforos) was born in 1950 in the village of Varyades in Ioannina. After finishing school, he studied electrical engineering in Athens but, as he says, he was born to be a magician. The stimulus for the ignition of his artistic power was an itinerant magician. He is self-taught in the art of juggling, as there was no Juggling Academy in the 1960s. Literature on the subject was scarce and hard to find, and the artists of the day were inaccessible and 'secretive'. He began to learn the art by watching other magicians wherever and whenever the opportunity arose, and later, by travelling abroad, he came into contact with great magicians and attended professional courses. He started as a very passionate amateur, to reach today to be a distinguished professional both in Greece and internationally. He has been married since 1981 to Anastasia Konstantis from Cyprus with whom he has two children, Yannis "Aristocratis" (10/04/1986 - 20/06/2004) and Theodoulis "Circe". In 1975, he founded the Academy of Postal Typists, in the form of a civil non-profit company and is the general manager of its operation. With a lot of effort and hard work Christopher has been collecting and assembling posters, books, costumes and tools of Greek magicians of the last 200 years for 35 years. In the library room of the A.T. there are over 800 books, Greek and foreign, and many of them are rare. The visit to the Museum and Library is free of charge. At the 1st Tapestry Olympiad in 2005 he presented, in a world first, a spectacle of his own inspiration and construction - illusion, where he managed to magically escape through a burning cauldron. His means of escape remains a mystery to this day. One of Christopher's dreams is to gather material for the publication of a book with the biographies of all Greek magicians and the history of the art of magic in Greece. Specializing in children's programs, he loves to write scripts for illustrated stories (comics) which are inspired by his imagination or based on real life events. His desire is to bring to the lips of young and old alike the most precious commodity: laughter, because he believes that the magician as a gifted artist is above all an entertaining entertainer. Christopher's artistic, cultural and especially social contribution is considerable. For all these and many other activities Christopher has been honoured by important persons and institutions.
